BWC Program Aims To Reduce Small Employer Premiums

The Bureau of Workers' Compensation Monday announced a new option for small employers to lower their premiums and boost worker safety.

The Policy Activity Rebate program allows employers to earn credits for completing activities designed to improve workplace safety processes, the bureau said.

Employers will receive a 50% premium rebate, up to $2,000, if they earn 11 credits from 33 available activities during the policy year that starts July 1.

"Even small employers can save money and improve workplace safety by better understanding Ohio's workers' compensation system," BWC COO Kevin Abrams said in a statement. "PAR offers a flexible alternative for smaller employers to improve safety and become more engaged in their risk management programs."

The options include attending safety training, bringing an employee back to work on light or modified duty, and enrolling employees in the bureau's wellness program.

Public employers can start signing up for the program July 1.

2018-19 Slate of NAWBO Columbus Board Officers

In early April 2018, an announcement was sent to all members of NAWBO Columbus soliciting nominations for five (5) open Board seats.

The NAWBO Columbus Nominating Committee met over the past few weeks to interview candidates who expressed interest in serving on the Chapter's Board of Directors during the 2018-19 fiscal year. New officer terms begin on July 1, 2018 and last for two years.

Below is the slate of officers as recommended by the Nominating Committee, chaired by Sheri Chaney Jones, Measurement Resources Company.

President Elect - Betty Collins, Director, Brady Ware & Co.

Betty joined Brady Ware & Company in 2012 through a merger with Nipps, Brown, Collins & Associates. She started her career in public accounting in 1988. Betty is co-leader of the Long Term Care service team, which helps providers of services to Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and nursing centers establish effective operational models that also maximize available funding. Betty also consults with other small businesses, helping them prosper with advice on general operations management, cash flow optimization, and tax minimization strategies.

In addition, Betty leads Brady Ware’s Women’s Initiative, which aims to provide resources, support, and encouragement to the firm's women employees to develop them to their highest potential. She empowers her coworkers to strive toward leadership roles within Brady Ware & Company and help them create a work/life balance while inspiring them to set and reach personal and professional goals. The Women's Initiative also promotes women-to-women business relationships for clients, and presents an annual conference with NAWBO Columbus and the Women’s Small Business Accelerator that supports women business owners, women leaders, and other women who want to succeed. Betty actively participates in women-oriented conferences through speaking engagements and board activity.

Betty is a member of NAWBO Columbus and the Better Business Bureau’s Women in Business Networking, both of which Brady Ware supports through corporate sponsorships. Betty has most recently served on the NAWBO Columbus Board as the Treasurer.

Betty is a graduate of Mount Vernon Nazarene College and she’s a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants. Betty is also chairs the Gahanna Chamber’s Empowering Women Committee.

 

Vice President - Michelle Casper, Attorney, SmithAmundsen, LLC

Michelle is an active member of NAWBO Columbus having been named the 2017 Member of the Year. She has most recently served on the Board as the VP of Programming and she is involved in a Roundtable.

Michelle is a civil defense litigation and business attorney practicing in Columbus, Ohio and working to grow our firm's practices here in Ohio. She prides herself on finding creative opportunities to resolve cases for clients and working to avoid costly and lengthy litigation. But, when litigation is imminent, she is strong to push her opponents while always maintaining the utmost integrity and honesty in the profession. In addition to her Ohio clients, she also services clients throughout Indiana and Illinois and regularly counsels on matters pertaining to business, insurance and construction litigation, property damage, construction defects, corporate law, and complex negligence issues. She is comfortable with civil practice and procedure cases, including catastrophic personal injury, wrongful death cases, slip and fall accidents and property damage.

 

Treasurer - Maritza S. Nelson, Managing Member, Law Office of Maritza S. Nelson, LLC

Maritza started her law firm in the summer of 2014, to help serious entrepreneurs, small to mid-size businesses, and nonprofits do just that. She has helped serious entrepreneurs, small to mid-size businesses, and nonprofit organizations minimize legal risks, resolve disputes, and plan for the future. She regularly advises clients on a variety of business issues including business formation, contract drafting, employment law, intellectual property (including trademarks and licensing), and succession planning.

She also defends clients in a variety of business disputes and litigation, including internal disputes with business partners, breach of contract cases, employment litigation, franchisor/franchisee disputes, intellectual property infringement, and appeals. Maritza’s goal is always to help clients protect their interests, especially in the business they've worked so hard to build.

In addition to running the firm, Maritza serves as Outside General Counsel for the Juvenile Justice Coalition, Community Shares of Mid-Ohio, and other small to mid-size businesses. She also serves on the Public Policy Committee for NAWBO Columbus and is an active member of a Roundtable.

 

VP of Membership - Katy Tombaugh, CEO, Wellness Collective

VP of Programming - Karlena Wallace, President & CEO, Girls Move Ahead, USA

Karlena Wallace has developed a diverse skill set through her professional experience in human resources, revenue and finance, and branding and communications. In 2002, she brought her first entrepreneurial endeavor to life and was featured in the Lakeland Ledger (then a New York Times newspaper) as a trailblazer in the young professional space.

Karlena continued to break new ground as principal of Stiletto Woman Media, a multi-functional media platform for women, which produced a coveted magazine and an awards and business conference. Thanks to Karlena’s authentic leadership, vibrant branding, and business acumen, audiences across the nation connect with her coaching style and empowering approach to business.

In 2017, Karlena founded Girls Move Ahead, USA, a creative arts nonprofit organization designed to bridge the gender leadership gap for next-generation female innovators. In addition to the organization's movement platform, which builds self-assurance and discipline, its creative writing and mentorship clinics help students gain lifelong leadership skills. Upon starting her business, Karlena became an active member of NAWBO Columbus by serving on the Communications committee.

In the corporate and nonprofit sectors, Karlena has a proven track record of success. She has managed the application of over $900 million in revenue in the private sector as well as payroll budgets greater than $1 million, and she has provided financial oversight for budgets of more than $800,000 and expense allocations exceeding $600,000 annually.

Karlena is a graduate of Ohio University, and earned a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Communication from the Scripps School of Communication.
