Meet Lynda L. Buel, Owner and CEO of Security Risk Management Consultants

I am Lynda L. Buel, CPP, CFE, CSC, CPTED Practitioner, Owner and CEO of Security Risk Management Consultants (SRMC).

I am a member of the NAWBO Columbus Membership Committee, NAWBO National Circle, and NAWBO Columbus Roundtable.

Tell us about your business.

Security Risk Management Consultants (SRMC) is an independent physical security consulting firm that assists organizations in assessing their risk and providing technology design, specifications, policy and procedure development, RFP for security guard services, emergency management planning and training, and the implementation of the most appropriate security measures for their organization.

What inspired you to get into your business?

Ever since the age of 4, I wanted to be an FBI agent. Instead of becoming a FBI agent, I decided to get into the private security sector and became a police officer for Bank One, a financial organization headquartered in Columbus, OH. I was responsible for investigating all the internal and external crimes perpetrated against the Bank as well as the physical security operations. After 18 years in the industry, a peer of mine convinced me to move to the “dark” side of security and start consulting. The rest is history. I have been consulting for the last 17 years.

What are your three best practices or best tips that every NAWBO member needs to hear?

SRMC is in the professional services business and it is imperative that we commit to the following:

  1. A solid customer retention strategy. The best customer any business has is the one they already have. We all know that it is much more profitable to keep an existing customer than to try and find a new customer. One means is through the utilization of a robust customer retention management (CRM) system. Good customer relations requires good customer retention.
  2. Project profitability. Accurately tracking each one of your project’s time and expenses is key to keeping your profit margins high. You need to compare your projected times and expenses against your actuals to ensure you are charging the right fess for your services.
  3. Streamline your processes. Having accurate and appropriate documented processes is a key to the success of any business for it cuts down on unnecessary errors.

What does your future look like?

We are in growth mode and currently evaluating offering additional services which would allow our customers to engage us for more security related services without having to hire another company. In the last 4 ½ years, we have doubled our staff and our goal is to increase that number in the next year.

What do you do in your free time?

Free time – what is that? All kidding aside, my favorite pastime is to spend time with family (my husband and children) at our home in the country relaxing, hiking, four wheeling, cooking, and being away from connectivity. We have no cell phone coverage or internet which is amazing!

What is your company website?

My business website is www.srmcllc.com

What motivated your organization to get involved with NAWBO?

My organization got involved with NAWBO because of their work with women initiatives in advancing woman owned businesses toward economic, political , and social achievement.

What does your company offer NAWBO members and why is this important to them?

At Aflac, we understand that running a small business is a 24/7 job. Staying on top of trends and insights in the changing health care benefits landscape can be overwhelming for many employers, but having valuable resources and information at their fingertips, such as those provided on the new Small Business Hub, can help put small-business owners' minds at ease.

The launch of the Small Business Hub resulted from the 2016 Small Business Happiness Report – both designed to serve as resources for small-business owners looking for insight to better support their employees and manage their business.

Created as a destination for employers, with a focus on small business, the newly designed Aflac Small Business Hub aggregates insights and resources small-business owners seek to help them with their benefits decisions. This includes references and tools to understand Health Care Reform legislation, the benefits of choosing the right insurance partner, how to retaintop talent, and more. The hub, available at aflac.com/smallbusiness, provides employers with important information they need in a manner that is engaging, quick to find and easy to digest all in one place provided by an industry expert.

What is the one best practice you've learned from working with businesses in your company that our members should know?

The best practice that I have learned is having a consultative approach to businesses. To be a problem solver and to be able to offer solutions is important, but even more so is building a trusting relationship first so that there is a comfortable dialogue. That is how you build loyalty and long lasting business relationships.
