Meet Rachel Doss of sambaFRESH and New NAWBO Member

Tell us about your business.sambaFresh

sambaFRESH is raw juice company that is passionate about supporting local and sustainable agriculture, empowering our community to be more mindful of what they put in their bodies, and making juice that you just can't get enough of! We are committed to being a positive force in the community by providing jobs with livable wages to disenfranchised communities.

What inspired you to get into your business?

I was working in the clinical side of biotech and just didn't feel fulfilled so I decided to take a leap. Little did I know that the move from allopathic medicine to a more naturopathic health perspective would have such a monumental impact in my day to day life. The inclusion of more fresh, raw calories and gradual exclusions of most processed food products radically changed my energy levels and ultimately resolved chronic issues with my joints and skin. The power of fresh raw juice is awesome and doesn't need a sales pitch or coercion. The proof is in the way juice can heal.

What are your three best practices or best tips that every NAWBO member needs to hear?

There will never be enough hours in the day. I've learned that "a good stopping point" doesn't quite exist. It took some time for me to learn to turn-off the business mode. To keep your sanity and any hope for a modicum of a work/life balance, it is imperative to set strict business hours. Set aside specific time frames that are sacred; for a hobby, for your dog, for your family and above all for yourself, you need time that is off-limits to the your business life.
The best and cheapest form of marketing is word of mouth. Make sure the words this world has to say about you are only positive.
The meanest people in this world are those in need of the most kindness; be kind even when it is undeserved. Gratitude is the ultimate key to success; remain grateful even when things appear to be falling apart. Most great businesses started as just an idea in someone's head; always be confident that your vision is worthy.

What does your future look like?

We are on schedule to finish and open our Powell location in the early portion of 2017. This is our year for growth and expansion and I'm really pumped for the changes coming to sambaFRESH. We are very excited for all of the possibilities that lie ahead of us in this new year.

What do you do in your free time?

Outside of sambaFRESH, I am a newlywed and a new step-mom. My free time usually includes family strolls to the local coffee shop, walks through the park with our 3 dogs, and an obscene amount of boardgames. We love cooking and baking, so the remainder of my free time is spent in the kitchen. My step-daughter, Ciana, loves being my kitchen side-kick and is quickly becoming quite the little chef. I grew up as the only plant-based kid in a meat-eating house and have welcomed the challenge of cooking vegan/vegetarian dishes to fool my meat-eating family.

What motivated your organization to get involved with NAWBO?

NAWBO is an organization of incredible women that are transforming their lives, their businesses and their industries, helping each other succeed. Your Management Team joined NAWBO to be an active part of the community.

What does your company offer NAWBO members and why is this important to them?

Your Management Team’s offerings are three-fold. First, we provide support, friendship and community. Second, we advocate for positive change and support of our government for our microbusinesses. Third, and most important, we offer a training program, ScaleUp America that is funded by the SBA. It is an 8-month training that guides entrepreneurs to change their mindset, take control of their business, and be the success change agent their business needs.

What is the one best practice you’ve learned from working with businesses in your company that our members should know?

That every entrepreneur has the opportunity to succeed. We are in control of our destiny and choices, even when we don’t feel in control. By surrounding ourselves with a support group and experts we increase our success rate. We do not have to do it all alone.
